The Blackwater Les Paul is one awesome guitar. Gibson’s website calls it “the do-it-all Les Paul and for good reason. This baby does everything. It was created with Chad Kroeger of Nickelback in mind; in face he actually helped in the development of this axe. The first thing you’ll notice is the beautiful translucent black finish; it completely distinguishes it from the standard Les Pauls. The body is made of figured maple while the back is of stunning mahogany. This guitar oozes quality from the ground up. The little touches are there as well, from the trust rod cover, which has “Blackwater” nicely engraved, to large stars detailed on the side of the fret board. Top that off with chrome hardware and you have looks that kill.
Les Paul uses their standard humbuckers in this guitar since this is what Chad Kroeger uses. The 498T is in the bridge position which is hotter than the neck pickup, a 490R. It supplies that extra-high output along with vintage qualities. The 490r provides a classic ’57 humbucker sound with increase in the upper mids. Make no mistake, just because these pickups are used on most Les Pauls, doesn’t mean they don’t sound absolutely amazing. Couple this with GraphTech’s Ghost System piezo bridge saddles (secretly part of the Tune-o-matic style bridge) and you’ve got one amazing guitar. Additionally this guitar is equipped with a stereo jack so your sound can resonate throughout the theater.
This guitar is so popular that it’s actually pretty hard to find. Ebay.com may be your best option. Guitartrader.com sometimes carry used blackwater Les Pauls. Check your favorite guitar stores and you may be a bit disappointed that they are not only out of stock, but more may not be on the way. If you are lucky enough to get a hold of one of these babies, hang on to it.
